Collectibles: Making Money Out Of Memorabilia

by Daniel Wright

A fitting example of the phrase 'one man's junk is another man's treasure' are collector's items. A good and fun way to remember the events that took place a while ago, or in a different time period, is by buying collectibles. It can be a profitable business for those who know what they are actually doing.

You can find people collecting just about anything. What is collectible to some may not be to others. Some people like to collect items associated with movies, stamps or butterflies, while others may like to collect china or dolls. Some collections increase in value and others are only valuable to the collectors.

Comic books are another popular collectible. If you have a first print comic book in mint condition, then it will be worth a lot of money. Of course, if you find the right buyer you can sell anything. People buy collectibles from many different sources. Comic book stores and sports memorabilia stores are two great sources.

There are also a lot of junk stores, like thrift stores where people give their unwanted items to support a charity. Estate sales frequently have a variety of surprising items. Many collectors frequent online auctions and other auctions. Internet is also a great place from where people find good bargains.

One group of collectibles that is particularly interesting is sports memorabilia. Although the primary audience remains fans of teams and athletes, the items are also desired by others. Historians, autograph collectors and others also want items to complete collections. This raises the values of certain autographed items. If you can obtain a Babe Ruth, Ted Williams or Arnold Palmer autographed item, it will be worth a fair amount. The significance of sports to the community at large is part of the reason these items carry such great sentimental and monetary value.

Coca-Cola collectibles are very popular things to collect. These collectibles can include tins, posters, glasses, old Coca-Cola cans, figurines, and ornaments. Old Coca-Cola items showed women dressed nicely drinking Coca-Cola. More recent items show the Coca-Cola polar bear.

For a couple centuries now collecting has become refined. Collecting things such as art, stamps, and coins were most popular. Now people pick a variety of things to collect like telephone pole insulators, mason jars, and barbed wire. They form organizations for these collections. You would be intrigued by the many different and unusual thing people collect. Investments are another way people collect.
